Summer at Delphi is full of FUN! Young campers aged 4 - 11 come from around the Westside and even from abroad to spend their summer days at Delphi. Campers are given a wide selection of activities from which to choose. While every summer is different, campers may learn how to build a solar-powered car, perform in a play, try a new sport or take care of an animal. All campers go on day trips each week to a variety of fun locations around the Los Angeles area. They may go to the beach, the Long Beach aquarium, the Getty Museum or the Hollywood Bowl. During morning study hours, campers get personalized attention from experienced and caring teachers. Camp is a great place for children to sharpen skills, advance in existing studies or explore new interests. Young students will also take advantage of our early reading program. In fact, many of our new campers will learn to read for the very first time! In just one summer, a camper can conquer a subject they've been having difficulty with or explore new subjects of interest. Cali-Camp is celebrating its 56th summer of providing day camp services to children. A non-competitive program on a 20-acre ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains, Cali-Camp offers boys and girls swimming, hiking, horseback riding, tennis, golf, gymnastics (including trampolines), drama, fishing, go-carts and dune buggies, archery, target sports, nature, ropes challenge courses, climbing walls, arts and crafts and overnights. Transportation is included in the tuition and serves families on the Westside, South Bay, Malibu and San Fernando Valley. ARTrageous Art Camp

The Palos Verdes Art Center offers two kinds of camp for children and youth. First, there’s the ever-popular Art-rageous Camp for children age 5-12. ACTION SPORTS ALL DAY WITH INSTRUCTION & NOT JUST BABYSITTING...Each session consists of surf instruction, volleyball, boogie boarding & the all new craze…..stand up paddle boarding! We focus on how to be safe and comfortable in the ocean as well as getting up and surfing its waves. We provide a 5:1 ratio throughout the day, but spend one on one time with timid beginners at first. We help all levels progress & discuss different surf & safety related topics each day that will help them become lifelong surfers. All equipment and wetsuits provided and each student receives a goody bag. Our staff is older than most camps and are all CPR Certified, First Aid and American Red Cross certified.

Summer is a time for summer camps for the kids! Beach camp, science camp, cooking camp....day camp, sleep away camp, overseas camp. So many options. But have you ever gone on a family camp experience?

Catalina Island Camps and Ocean Futures Society come together in a cooperative effort and host the JEAN MICHEL COUSTEAU FAMILY CAMP. Every summer since 1997, Jean-Michel Cousteau and Dr. Richard "Murf" Murphy and other Ocean Futures staff have come to Howlands Landing for a 5 day 4 night family camp adventure.

Jean-Michel Cousteau Family camp is held at Catalina Island Camps each August - this year August 19-23. Jean-Michel snorkels with families and presents on his current explorations of the world’s oceans and marine life. Families each have their own cabin and get to participate in camp activities such as sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, archery, arts and crafts, hiking, nature programs, garden and composting, ropes course and climbing wall. All ages are welcome and several families will have 3 generations on hand. Food is great and there is a happy hour every afternoon before dinner. Evening programs are a mix of camp fun like the no-talent talent show and night snorkels, night hikes, and star gazing.

Jean-Michel brings the spirit and excitement of a Cousteau expedition to families in the fun and relaxed setting on Howlands Landing. Family Camp is a unique opportunity to get to know Jean-Michel personally and experience his message of inspiration and hope! Plus a great "camp" experience for the family!

Get Creative! KidsArt - Redondo Beach

Spring Break is over the next two weeks for most area schools, and maybe you have not had a chance to think about what you will do all week with the kids! Relax, the kids can have a blast at Monster Camp or Palette of Art Camp where a different media is offered each day including figure drawing, clay sculpture, anime, cartooning, and cartoon paper sculpture. KidsArt in Redondo Beach is offering Spring camps both the week of April 6-10 and the week of April 13-17. Choose a morning or afternoon workshop or a full day of both. Palette of Art runs from 8:30-11:30am and Monster Camp runs from 12:00-3:00pm. Half day camp costs $228 per week and full day camp runs $456.

In addition to the Spring Camps, KidsArt has many great summer workshops for kids. KidsArt has expanded its program to include a variety of summer workshops for students who are interested in the arts. These workshops are designed to broaden perception, abilities, and affinity for many different media as well as spark a desire for future investigation and learning as a young artist. Workshops are different each week and are for ages 7 and up. Explore Clay Sculpture, Figure Drawing and Portraiture, Cartooning and Japanese Anime, and Animation.
They also now offer workshops for 4-6 year olds each week with Clay and Paper Sculpture. Favorite characters from books, movies, and television will be drawn, painted, and/or sculpted in a variety of mediums such as colored pencils, markers and watercolors. Camp Is For Every Child!

Watching my son after he returned from summer camp was the first hint that remarkable growth was underway. He was engaged, giving, and confident. Viewing the camp experience as a respite from the real world is somehow to miss the point—it is the real world—simply getting dirty, trying to pull harder so your team wins, finding the friend you always wished for, being yourself—it’s the time of your life and the promise of the future.

As a parent, I constantly ask where do children have their mental, personal, emotional, and physical needs nurtured? Where will they learn to get along with others, to take safe risks, to deal with conflict in a constructive way that encourages them to be creative, to explore and discover, to learn by actively doing, to try—to fail and try again? In the camp community, I find what I intuitively know as a parent—to be a positive, productive adult one needs the opportunity to truly experience childhood . . . that is how one grows.

Camps enjoy the opportunity of working their magic with all of our children: the gifted athlete, the budding musician, the curious naturalist, the first-time camper, and the child with a disability. The idea that camp is for every child isn’t just a pipe dream—it’s a reality. And one that parents and children celebrate and the American Camp Association supports by promoting safe, fun, and developmentally-appropriate experiences in the camp setting.

The entire experience began with a single camp—The Gunnery Camp in 1861. As I write, I am buoyed by the recognition of just how dynamically this idea has taken flight. Over 11,000,000 children and adults will participate in camp in 2008. Overall, the numbers continue to grow, and this popular movement testifies so loudly to the extraordinary benefits that camp provides to our young people—responsibility, exploration, engagement, not to mention the spiritual dimension of the camp experience.

Is camp quantifiable? Maybe not—but as a parent, I can only react with extreme pleasure as my son displayed those acts of kindness and generosity of spirit that follow so naturally from his time at camp. His chance to develop and grow was marked by constant changes—our camps meet those challenges every day of every session and that’s why doing what we do becomes so vital.

Camp is about firsts—a first campfire outdoors, leading a pony, catching a frog, enjoying the evening stories, and being chosen—chosen to be part of a community that values each child and his or her special gifts. It’s about making memories and honoring the traditions of those who have come before. Children are alight with the idea that their acorn hangs from a rafter where their parents and aunts and uncles placed theirs so many years before.

The American Camp Association has grown through its commitment to research and education in the field of child development. We communicate these best practices for each camp member: from waterfront safety to the healthy diets and enriching activities carefully tailored to children’s inherent curiosity and sense of discovery. From camper-to-counselor ratios to medical care, we understand what makes a camp community safe and fun, and our member camps make the extraordinary commitment to meet and surpass those standards.

We love what we do at the American Camp Association, for every child and every family, every camp staff director and counselor. The bar couldn’t be higher for us knowing that our goals and standards are the ones that support the highest aims of the camp community—safe environments; caring, competent adult role models; healthy activities and learning experiences; service to the community and the environment; and opportunities for leadership and personal growth.
